Cost Performance Index (CPI)

Learn the concept, see how it is used in the simulation, and understand what the result tells you as the Project Manager.

A ratio that compares the value earned with the actual cost incurred.

Cost Performance IndexCPI = EV รท ACAre we getting the expected value from the money spent?
CPI > 1.00More value is being earned than the cost incurred.
CPI = 1.00Earned value and actual cost are equal.
CPI < 1.00Actual cost is greater than the value earned.
Example

A CPI of 0.80 means that, in EVM terms, the project is earning US$0.80 of value for every US$1.00 spent.

In the game, calculation cards on the weekly report connect the value back to its formula.

๐ŸŽฎ Why this matters in the game

Do not treat this measure in isolation. Your resource choices, overtime, work completed and cumulative cost affect the story told by your EVM results. Use the weekly report and dashboard together before deciding what to change next.
