Managing Resources

Learn the concept, see how it is used in the simulation, and understand what the result tells you as the Project Manager.

Resources are one of your main management levers. They can increase production opportunity, but they also change Actual Cost. The aim is to use enough capacity to support the project without spending blindly.

Core resources

The baseline includes three core resources. Each core resource costs US$1,000 per week, and the Project Manager baseline cost is US$1,500 per week. In Week 1, these are the resources used to begin the project.

Optional resources from Week 2

Giselle Grant and Glenda McDonald become available as optional capacity from Week 2. Each optional resource costs US$1,000 for the week in which that resource is used.

Optional resource add controls
Add capacity: select + Add on the optional resource you want to use. Once selected, that resource joins the week's team and can roll production.

How adding a resource changes cost

When either one or both optional resources are used, the Project Manager cost increases by an additional US$1,000 for that week because of the additional management effort. This PM increase is once for the week, not US$1,000 for each optional resource.

Removing an optional resource

Optional resources are weekly decisions. If you add a resource and then decide you do not want to use that person for the current week, use the Remove control before you continue. You can also make a different resource decision in a later week.

Adding people is not guaranteed recovery

An additional resource gives you another production opportunity, but production is still determined by the dice. The extra cost is certain; the exact production result is not.

What should I look at before adding capacity?

Review current progress, SPI, CPI, cumulative Actual Cost and how much work remains. The right decision depends on both schedule need and cost performance.
