EVM starts with three numbers

Compare what you planned, what you earned and what you spent. Almost every performance measure in the game grows from these three values.

Turn numbers into meaning

Use CPI and SPI together. The index tells you the relationship; the trend tells you whether it is changing.

Example

Cost efficiency can be favourable while achieved progress is still below the planned position. EVM helps you see both at once.

Your 12-week project journey

Every week adds another planned 30 tasks and US$4,500 of Planned Value until the project reaches its BAC.

Start with the three EVM building blocks

Most of the measures in your weekly report begin with three values: what you planned to accomplish, what you actually accomplished, and what it actually cost.

PVPlanned ValueBudgeted value of the work planned.
EVEarned ValueBudgeted value of work actually completed.
ACActual CostWhat the completed work has actually cost.

Read What is Earned Value Management? first. It connects PV, EV and AC before introducing CPI, SPI and forecasting.
